@Yoshiisland

It’s a crude image (on purpose of course), but I can’t help but feel that it rings true. Everytime I check out a new Brawl level, I am torn in two. I really love the theme of the levels, from Animal Crossing to Sunshine. My issue is with the layout of the actual terrain. The above image pretty much sums up the issues I see with the playing fields. Let’s take a closer look at the Brawl levels that relate to the drawing.
So far there have been 8 stages announced. Out of those 8 stages, 5 of them have very similar layouts. One may have an added platform or two, but the general composition is the same. A flat surface and a couple platforms in the air. Now some of the stages included above have more than one element to them. For instance, the StarFox themed stage does change, seeing that the playing field rotates with the ship. Still though, that one defining element from the original element is present. To take things a step further, there are a couple more stages out of the 8 we have seen that contain elements similar to the stages above. I didn’t feel they were related closely enough to be included, but that is up to you to decide.
Perhaps we shouldn’t be worried just yet. If we take a look at the 29 stages from Super Smash Bros. Melee, there are more than a handful that have similar elements. I can’t say that a good number of them are as clearly defined as the examples in Brawl, but there are definitely stages that share numerous design elements. I will have to go through Melee stage by stage to see just how similar the stages are. Doing that might actually be pointless though. If I have been playing Melee for all these years and haven’t been bothered by underlying similarities in level composition, then it doesn’t make sense to pick it apart now.
Most importantly, there are a bunch of Brawl stages yet to be seen. As I mentioned above, Melee had 29 stages when everything was said and done. Hopefully Brawl will at least match what Melee offered in terms of playing fields. You can also take into account the fact that Nintendo loves to be sneaky. Why do a vast majority of these Brawl levels look similar? Perhaps because these are the levels Nintendo wants us to see. There could be some truly outstanding and varied stages waiting in the wings, but we won’t learn about that until the game actually hits. Keep in mind that we are still waiting for a confirmation of online play. Nintendo never gets enough of teasing its audience. When it comes to hidden quirks, I would have to say that the Smash Bros. franchise takes the cake. I could see how Nintendo would want to keep that same feeling when talking about Brawl via the official website.
With such a rich history of games included in Brawl, the idea for level designs are near endless. We don’t even know the half of it when it comes to stages. On top of that, we don’t know how many characters will be in the game. With new characters comes new stages and themes. Throw in the fact that more third party characters could be making an appearance in Brawl, and that opens things up even more. We will just have to be patient with this one. I am sure we will see some more stages that will help us breathe a sigh of relief. The only thing is, it’s sure going to be a long wait.
